Bell Canyon owes its namesake to Charles A. Bell, who was the original homesteader of the Bell Canyon area and an influential newspaper publisher in the 1880's. Prior to that, the land now known as Bell Canyon was called Rancho El Escorpio, and was one large ranch given in the form of a land grant from Mexican Governor, Pio Pico. It stayed a ranch until the late sixties, when the land was subdivided and the first 800 homes were built. So desirable was the area that these homes sold out within ten days.
