Van Nuys, nicknamed "the heart of the Valley" is a colorful community with an international appeal that is a result of the multitude of ethnic restaurants that are found in the neighborhood. The community was named after its founder, Dutch farmer and banker, Issac Newton Van Nuys ( no kidding!) who built the first hotel in the area, appropriately named the Van Nuys Hotel! In 1911, lots were offered for public purchase, and Van Nuys quickly became one of the Valley's first planned communities.

Van Nuys is home to Woodley Avenue Park which includes the Sepulveda Wildlife Area. With numerous trails, a cricket field, an archery range and acres of open, grassy fields, it is a hidden jewel in the neighborhood.

Many celebrities have lived in Van Nuys over the course of its ninety-six year history, including Dodger Don Drysdale, actresses Jane Russell and Natalie Wood, and Andy Devine who served as its honorary mayor from 1938-1957.
