THE TOWN OF MANHATTAN BEACH

The area now known as Manhattan Beach was once part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, a ten-mile stretch of ocean front acreage purchased in 1863 by a Scotsman, Sir Robert Bennett. In the early 1900's the property was owned by two men, George Peck and developer John Merrill. Unable to agree upon a name for their new town, they decided to flip a coin, the winner earning the naming rights! Merrill won and named the town after his own home town, Manhattan, New York.

Today, Manhattan Beach has become a mecca for beach volleyball and surfing. The town plays host to the International Surf Festival and the Manhattan Beach Volleyball tournament every August. Hollywood has also been attracted to the beauty of Manhattan Beach, making it a popular filming location for a number of movies such as Point Break, Starsky and Hutch and popular TV shows such as Weeds, and 90210.
