THE CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS

The area now known as Beverly Hills was first settled in 1828 and was named "Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas." Eventually, that 4500 acre settlement became subdivided, but it wasn't until 1900 that the area was purchased by a group of oilmen and renamed Beverly Hills after Beverly Farms in Beverly, Massachusetts. A few years later, the famous Beverly Hills Hotel was built, drawing a high-society crowd to walk the lusciously landscaped grounds and stay in the most expensively appointed rooms. These patrons included among them some of the top celebrities of the time, who then bought homes in the surrounding subdivisions. Thus the long-standing tradition of providing a haven for movie stars and recording artists was born. Starting with the mansion built by Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford in 1919 and continuing with current famous residents such as Jennifer Aniston, David Spade, and Vera Wang, Beverly Hills became known as home to the stars.

Like many of the cities in the L.A. basin, Beverly Hills was settled near the beginning of the twentieth century.
