THE CITY OF WEST HOLLYWOOD

The city of West Hollywood got its start as a railroad town. In 1894 Moses Sherman bought the land that is now West Hollywood, and it became the headquarters for the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad Company. In the early 1920's giants of the motion picture industry such as Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin bought movie studios in what was then known as "Sherman" and replaced the railroads as the new and upcoming industry. In 1925 the name "Sherman" was changed to "West Hollywood" and the town was transformed into one of the most glitzy and glamorous destinations in the West, with nightclubs, hotels and architecturally-diverse buildings — the Sunset Strip was born!

Throughout the years, West Hollywood has continued to live up to its motto as the "Creative City," serving as a gathering place for musicians, artists, and actors. From the rock legends of the 60's, the New Wave and punk rockers of the '80s and heavy metal bands of the '90s, West Hollywood continues to be on the cutting edge of the entertainment world, hosting such events as the HBO Emmy Party and the Sunset Strip Music Festival.
