THE CITY OF SHERMAN OAKS

Sherman Oaks was one of the first San Fernando Valley communities to experience real estate development in the early 1900's. The land was purchased by the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company in 1910 in anticipation of the Los Angeles Aqueduct Project. General Moses Hazeltine Sherman, one of the owners, purchased 1,000 acres for himself and began to sell individual lots in 1927. These lots were to become the town which bears his name — Sherman Oaks. Today, the city is a local hub for transportation, business and shopping, one of the main thoroughfares being Ventura Boulevard. Sherman Oaks has been home to some of Hollywood's more notable celebrities including the famous Las Vegas performer, Liberace, who had a piano-shaped pool in his backyard, and a newly-wedded Marilyn Monroe. The first Urban Search and Rescue Task force to respond in the wake to the 9/11 terrorist attacks came from Sherman Oaks' own Fire Station #88.
